ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R In the wake of a steep hike in the number of new COVID-19 cases in the national capital, the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi has imposed a night curfew on the campus till further orders. There will be, however, no restrictions on the movements of people who are engaged in emergency services.

"All stakeholders of the University are hereby, informed that the curfew will be in force in the University premises from 11 pm to 5 am till further orders. However, there shall be no restrictions on movements of persons who are engaged in emergency services, medical emergency and supply of goods during the curfew period on the production of valid I-card," read a notification issued by the university.

People to and from airports, railway stations and ISBTs will be allowed to travel on the production of valid tickets. Shops  dealing  with  essential  foods,  groceries,  fruits  and  vegetables, diary and milk booth, pharmaceuticals and ATMs will be allowed to function. Whereas, all other shops, school canteens and dhabas shall be closed during the curfew timings, said the notification.

It further said Dr B.R. Ambedkar Central Library will remain closed strictly from 11 pm to 5 am till further orders.

Delhi witnessed a massive spike in daily COVID-19 cases with 496 people testing positive on Tuesday, the highest since June 4. The positivity rate also rose to 0.89 per cent.

The total number of cases of new Omicron variant of COVID-19 recorded in Delhi has also mounted to 165. There were 67 Omicron cases in the national capital on Friday.

According to the health department, 120 travellers who tested positive on their arrival at the IGI Airport have been admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours. Their samples would be sent for genome sequencing.

The 50 per cent jump in daily COVID-19 cases was reported hours after a ''Yellow alert'' was implemented in the national capital under which schools, colleges, cinemas and gyms will remain closed, shops dealing in non-essential items will open on odd-even basis, and metro trains will run with 50 per cent of seating capacity.
