ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ ITDC NEWS It is a tight contest at the US senate races in Georgia. Democrat Raphael Warnock declared victory in the race against incumbent Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler late on Tuesday as he leads by over 30,000 votes.
The race between David Perdue and Jon Ossof is a toss-up, Ossof holds a lead of around 3,500 votes. The Georgia races are bound to decide which party controls the Senate and have the power to advance or block President-elect Joe Biden’s policy goals.
Biden secured 16 Electoral College votes when he won the state of Georgia on election night.
While Democrats would at least need the results to be a tie, where Vice President-elect Kamala Harris casts the deciding vote, Republicans need to win just one seat to gain control of the Senate.
No Democrat has won a US Senate race in Georgia; if the margins are very close, the outcome of the polls may remain in doubt for several days. Georgia saw more than 3 million citizens cast an early vote via mail or in person.. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that Vice President Mike Pence can toss out election results when the House and Senate meet on Wednesday to count and certify the Electoral College votes.
Democratic Senate candidate Jon Ossoff’s campaign in a statement said that they were confident of winning the runoff election when "all the votes are counted."
