ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ ITDC NEWS Elon Musk's tweet asking Twitter users to weigh in on Donbas referendum has irked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who retorted with his own poll.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla, tried out a Twitter poll where he asked users: "Let’s try this then: the will of the people who live in the Donbas & Crimea should decide whether they’re part of Russia or Ukraine," with a 'yes' and 'no' option.
His other proposals to bring peace in the region included redoing elections of annexed regions under UN supervision..
"Russia leaves if that is the will of the people. Crimea is formally part of Russia, as it has been since 1783 (until Khrushchev’s mistake). Water supply to Crimea assured. Ukraine remains neutral," he tweeted.
However, his tweet invited the wrath of Ukrainian leaders with Zelenskyy himself floating a poll of his own.
"Which @elonmusk do you like more?," Zelenskyy tweeted, offering two responses: "one who supports Ukraine, one who supports Russia."
Besides Zelenskyy, Lithuania's president Gitanas Nausėda too hit out at Musk. "Dear @elonmusk, when someone tries to steal the wheels of your Tesla, it doesn't make them legal owner of the car or of the wheels. Even though they claim both voted in favor of it. Just saying," Nausėda's tweet read.
Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak too suggested a "better peace plan" under which Ukraine took back its territories including Crimea; Russia was demilitarised and denuclearised, and "war criminals" faced an international tribunal.
However, Musk said he "didn't care if his proposal was unpopular" adding that he did care "that millions of people may die needlessly for an essentially identical outcome."
