ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ ITDC NEWS R West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar for his statement on the killing of around 10 people, including two children, in Birbhum’s Rampurhat, calling it politically motivated.

Governor Dhankhar, who is in Darjeeling, had expressed anguish over the killings. Banerjee termed his comments “highly unfortunate” and “unbecoming of a person holding a dignified constitutional post”.

“It pains me that you have chosen an unfortunate incident which occurred in Rampurhat on 22.03.2022 that resulted in loss of precious lives, to pass sweeping and uncalled for comments on law and order situation in the state,” Banerjee wrote to the governor.

“The incident is unfortunate and the state government is saddened at the loss of lives. The state government has taken immediate steps not only against the police officers posted in the subdivision, but also formed an SIT to investigate the incident… I have also asked DG to proceed to the spot to ensure the perpetrators of the heinous crimes are arrested and action taken against them.”

Interestingly, TMC leader in Birbhum, Anubrata Mandol, had dismissed the killings as an accident caused by a short circuit.

The chief minister said that a larger conspiracy to malign the state, too, cannot be ruled out.

“May I, in this context, remind you that your comments were not forthcoming whenever much more heinous incidents happened in BJP ruled states and also in other parts of the country… Whenever an unfortunate incident happens in Bengal, you leave no stone unturned to castigate and malign the state government. Your utterances and statements have political overtone which provide support to other political parties to browbeat the government.”

Despite several attempts, the governor could not be contacted.

But a Raj Bhavan official said, “Why should the governor take note of events in other states? The governor is deeply anguished that a tainted officer, her man Friday, is being given the charge of the SIT. Where's the impartiality?”
