Third front plan? Sharad Pawar to host opposition meeting tomorrow

ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar is expected to host a meeting of leaders of at least 15 opposition parties at his residence on Tuesday evening.

Media reports claimed the meeting, scheduled for 4pm, could aim to chalk up a common opposition agenda against the Narendra Modi government in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. NDTV reported the Congress had not been invited for the meeting. The fact that the Congress is not part of the meeting has led to speculation that Pawar was attempting to cobble together a 'third front' against the BJP.

Interestingly, on Monday, Pawar had met election strategist Prashant Kishor. This was their second meeting in 10 days. Speaking about their last meeting, NCP leader Nawab Malik claimed Pawar was working towards the objective of uniting opposition parties.

NDTV reported, "The discussions revolve around the talk of a third front—minus the BJP or the Congress—for the 2024 Lok Sabha election and a joint opposition candidate to challenge PM Modi. Many parties have indicated their willingness to join such a grouping, say sources. The election victory in Bengal, sources say, has shown that it is possible to outmanoeuvre the BJP and its virtually invincible poll machinery." Kishor had advised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her election campaign.
