ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R A day after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin called on Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi. Stalin’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi assumes significance politically, at a time when Tamil Nadu has been voting strongly against the Modi-led government’s breach of state rights.

On his first two day visit to Delhi, Stalin called on Sonia Gandhi at her residence along with his wife Durga. During the meeting, Stalin presented a book, A Journey of Civilisation - Indus to Vaigai, by R. Balakrishnan, a retired civil servant, and a shawl to Sonia Gandhi during the meeting.

While DMK leaders called it a courtesy call, Congress said the two parties would continue to work together. Rahul Gandhi tweeted a photo of their meeting saying, “We will keep working with the DMK to build a strong and prosperous state for the Tamil people.”

Stalin also tweeted pictures of the meeting and said the relationship between Congress and DMK dates back to the days of his father Karunanidhi. The DMK and Congress are allies and have fought all elections, except the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, together since 2004.

More than the meeting, the book presented by Stalin, turned into a topic of discussion in social media. The book talked about the common grounds and connecting threads that link the riddles of Indology, namely the authorship and language of the Indus Valley Civilization and the origins of Dravidian language speaking people in general and Old Tamil traditions.

The meeting, however, has sent out a strong message in the political circles, at a time when the DMK is fighting hard on state autonomy. Also, the meeting gains significance as three Rajya Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu are vacant following the demise of AIADMK’s A. Mohammed John and the resignations of K.P. Munusamy and R. Vaithialingam as they were elected to the state assembly. All the three Rajya Sabha seats will now go to the DMK and one of the three is likely to be given to the congress. But DMK sources say the Friday meeting between Stalin and Sonia Gandhi was nothing but a courtesy call, as his father M. Karunanidhi would always call on Sonia Gandhi whenever he was in Delhi.
