ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ ITDC NEWS Ex-chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Uma Bharti has created a flutter again by setting a deadline for liquor ban in the state and saying that only use of ‘latth’ (baton) can facilitate total prohibition.

Addressing media in Bhopal on Saturday, the leader known for her candid and sharp remarks said that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and state BJP president Vishnu Dutt Sharma felt that mass awareness was the only way to stop people from consuming liquor. However, she felt that it was possible only with the use of ‘latth’.

She also clarified that by use of ‘latth’, she meant strict implementation of the rule of law. Bharti said that she will go by the way of democracy and will wait till January 15 for an awareness campaign to take effect, but after that she will take to the streets to lead the prohibition campaign.

She said that during Navratri she will go on a pilgrimage of River Ganga and start her anti-liquor campaign after returning in January.

Later in a series of tweets, Bharti said that it was her unwavering stand that liquor should be banned. “Other ways could be found for revenue collection. Prohibition is easy in Madhya Pradesh because both Chief Minister Chouhan and BJP president Sharma were capable of doing so and both were against liquor and addiction,” she said.

She further tweeted that she had no regrets about using the word ‘latth’ because only strict laws or powerful campaigns of women can bring about liquor ban. “The main reason for rapes, molestation, accidents and ailments in Madhya Pradesh is liquor addiction. Sisters and daughters do not feel safe when inebriated people openly roam on the streets. Therefore liquor ban is very important for a peace-loving state like MP.”

This is not the first time that Uma Bharti has given a public statement on anti-liquor campaign in MP. In February this year she had announced the intention to launch a street campaign against liquor from Women’s Day on March 8. However, the CM and V.D. Sharma had then spoken about mass awareness as the best solution against liquor consumption and Bharti’s proposed campaign had fettered out.

Congress has reminded Bharti of this point after her latest statement. Spokesman Narendra Saluja tweeted to say “Uma Bharti ji you have spoken of liquor ban in MP by January 15 and also of taking to streets on this issue. Before this, on February 2, you had announced intention of liquor prohibition campaign from March 8. But the campaign did not take off and you vanished after making the announcement.”

He further tweeted, “Take to the streets against Shivraj government and we are with you. At present, the liquor mafia is fearless in MP. Recently, 70 persons died by consuming spurious liquor. Please stand by your announcement on liquor ban, and take to the streets. Ensure that this time your announcements should not remain mere words.”
