ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R The political churn in Punjab is continuing, adding to the Congress headaches and threatening consequences ahead of the state elections that are looming ahead. On Wednesday, over 30 MLAs, including four ministers in the Amarinder Singh government, met Harish Rawat, the Congress in-charge for Punjab. They all demanded that Amarinder Singh be ousted from the chief ministerial post. The four ministers—Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Charanjit Singh Channi—are scheduled to meet Sonia Gandhi today.

The rivalry between Amarinder and now Congress state president Navjot Singh Sidhu is a public affair, with both leaders taking swipes at each on a nearly daily basis. The most recent flashpoint was Sidhu's advisors making public statements on Kashmir, Pakistan and Indira Gandhi, with Amarinder expressing "shock" and calling for action against the aides.

What next in Punjab?

The aftermath of the meeting was a game of mixed signals. After the meeting, sources close to the ministers told The Indian Express that they had a “very fruitful” three-hour-long meeting with Rawat and that they had informed him about the “quid pro quo of Amarinder Singh with the Akalis”, and that they were informed by Rawat that a chief ministerial change was in the offing.
