ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R A day after five Assam Police personnel were killed and over 60 people injured in clashes on the border with Mizoram, the Assam government has declared the state wanted to protect the reserve forest on their border.

Speaking to mediapersons on Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was quoted by ANI as saying, "This is not a political issue. This is a boundary dispute between two states. This is a long-standing border dispute. There was dispute even at the time when Congress government was there on both sides. This is a dispute between two states, not between two political parties."

Referring to the nature of the dispute, Sarma said it related to the use of a reserve forest. "Can reserve forest be utilised for settlement? The dispute is not regarding land, it's regarding forest. Assam wants to protect the forest. It's not organising any settlement in forest area, we don't want any settlement there," Sarma said.

Sarma said the state government would move the Supreme Court to "ensure that the forests are protected".

Sarma said satellite images have shown that roads are being constructed and forests cleared for jhum cultivation in the border areas, which cannot be allowed.
